I want to make a build log to document a build for my newest project. It will take a long time.Mods: please move this if I am not in the right location! The plan: Grab a PPSh parts kit, convert it to SA only, add a 16' barrel and have fun! I even ordered a 71 round drum mag for it but that has not arrived yet.The parts I still need: Barrel shroud, barrel, trunnionWork that needs to be done: To be a legal SA conversion I have to make it so it permanently is SA only, make it fire from the closed bolt, find a barrel, find a trunnion and make sure it runs reliably.I intend to convert it to striker fired and use an AR firing pin. Ordered an 80% receiver from CSS but have not heard from them regarding it yet. In their defense the website did say up to 2-3 weeks before arrival.I played around with it a little and dang, it has to have the worst trigger in the world!
Little mini update. Im pretty excited about part of it.I also heard I have about 2-3 weeks for my upper receiver to be built and arrive. The 71rnd drum mag came in the mail today! The fit is pretty tight so I might need to take a little material off with some sandpaper at some point when Im tuning the mag. This will happen after the gun shoots reliably with the stick mag. Normally PPSh rifles fail to cycle with a drum mag that did not come with them from the factory. Some tuning can be done to help fix this. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt.Mag is Russian.
Marked with a shield with a five point star within. The other bit I am working on is converting the FCG to semi only and modify the bolt for closed bolt striker fired. The FCG seems simple. There is literally 3 or 4 parts in the FCG and a couple springs. Apparently the method that people that have done this before and used the original FCG is to just weld it into semi. To pull the part that allows FA just just make it FA only or make it not function after the first round.
Im going to pull the FCG out and weld it into semi from the inside to keep it looking good outside and keep any hideous welds from sight! Now.just need to find a welder. The bolt will be a little more fun. This is the original design:I took that photo for the marking but you get the idea. It is open bolt slam fire design. I need to make it fire from the closed bolt. There is two ways to do this. Hammer fired or striker fired.
Hammer fired requires a complete re-design of the FCG. I want to keep mine original. My option is then striker fired. The plan to do this is to cut 24mm, about.75', off the back of the bolt. Then drill through the bolt for the firing pin.
I plan to either make one or use an AR firing pin. I will need to make a piece for the striker to hit since an AR firing pin is not 5' long. I will need a spring to keep the firing pin from slam firing. I will drill a larger 15mm deep hole in the back of the striker for the spring that pushes the striker to fit in and collapse in. The original guide and spring will also be used.No my drawing but the idea of it all:The challenge here is to find a band saw and a drill press I can use. Need to grab another AR firing pin and some stainless stock and Ill be ready to fab some stuff!
The bolt will be on hold for a bit unless I end up hiring out to have it done. The bolt is unexpectantly hard. Tried to make a cut today and got nowhere fast.
I am suprised a bolt is this hard.Plan to work on the trigger group next. Per ATF I need to somehow make it so an unmodified FA FCG will not fit right on.
The plan: cut a little from the front of the FCG and put in a small blocking bar. Also need to weld the selector in semi.Really cannot wait to get the upper reciver and I am itching to shoot it. It has already gone to my favorites and ive only shouldered the sock on it once! Plan to go shooting tomorrow and will have to make do with shooting the PPS43.
It is NIB and never fired. Get to break in my other semi auto converted Russian burp gun! I must be addicted to these things. The PPSh41 was deisgned in 1941 by Shpagin ( hope I spelled that right) and the PPS43 was the shorter nd lower rate of fire sucessor in 1943. The PPS has a folding stock while the PPSh has wood. The PPSh is 33' OAL with a 10' barrel. Mine will be about 39'OAL with a 16' barrel.
It will be dang long!Realized that I will have to remove my parts kit's sights and add them to the new PPSh receiver. The front has a spot weld. Any suggestions other than drilling it out?As far as tools I have available right now to me in my apartment is a hack saw, portable drill and a dremel. Things will get interesting. Anyone have a band saw, drill press or mill and want to play with some cool old Russian stuff?
Finally got a day off. Since I dont have the tools needed for the bolt at home I fine tuned the idea for the bolt. Made a rough CAD drawing. Its probably within a MM or two so no use for CNC and just proof of concept.
Gives the gist of things. The back piece gets held back by the sear just the the bolt normally would when it was open bolt. Squeeze the trigger and after about a mile of trigger pull the striker on the back gets released, flung forward and hits the little piece sticking out of the bolt back.
That in turn hits the AR firing pin within and overcomes the spring holding it smashing the firing pin into the primer. Recoil moves the bolt back, ejects the round and the back half is captured again by the sear allowing the main part of the bolt to come forward and close. The spring within holding the firing pin should help eliminate the possibility of slam fire. I dont think they have any anymore. Would be neat to have one. This build is still in the works.
Hopefully I can get the FCG welded semi only this week then need to find someone I can get to make a tiny weld on the lower receiver for a denial that will only allow modified semi only FCGs.Contacted a guy who makes trunnions and barrels to see if I can grab one of each. No word on the upper receiver shipping yet from CSS. Today was the last day of the 2-3 week promised period. Sent an email to them Thursday or Friday, no reply yet. Might call and see what goes. When the receiver comes in I will be able to see what I might need to do for a denial to keep an unmodified bolt out and I believe the muzzle brake will need to be welded on. Might need the hole in the brake drilled out for the 16' barrel to it though.

ATF is confiscating barrel trunions in Russian PPSH-41 Parts kits. In the tech branch they were able to make one fire from a parts kit and the barrel trunions are to be cut. I had mine confiscated and spent a couple hours down at ATF offices.
They havent announced it like they should but they are giving people 3 days to comply once they get a letter if the kit was traceable. They went to InterOrdnance and took the customer lists. They only need the barrel trunion so far but some enforcement branches are taking the entire kits.
Don't get caught with them.XC. Actually Tech branch ruling states that the trunion is NOT legal to own it has to have the required cut, because this part is considered a machine gun by itself. The trunion on a PPSH41 is that part where the barrel is pinned in place by the pivot pin.
It is part of the upper receiver and the shroud is pinned and shaped onto the trunion. ATF does consider this part a machine gun according to the notice I received from Special Agent in Charge Kelvin Frenshaw from the Seattle ATF enforcement office.
With a parts kit,an intact barrel trunion, and an ingenious way of cinching it all together. (Sorry they told me in confidence how it was assembled.) It was able to fire. I realize it's crap. I think that all laws hindering law abiding citizens from owning any small arm they want is crap, I even mentioned it to the ATF agent I was speaking to and he agreed with me. He sees no problem with machine guns in the hands of the law abiding and he told me that he hopes that the assault weapons ban sunsets and would like to see most gun laws repealed.
We BS'd for about an hour just about different weapons. I guess not all of them are as bad as I thought. But we have politicians who have passed laws that illegally supercede constitutional protections and until we have a supreme court with balls to call horseshit on unconstitutional laws like the Lautenburg amendment that violates Art 1 Sec 9 concerning expost facto laws we are screwed. Even ATF administrative rulings supercede the Constitution anymore. Its a sad time in American history.
